“HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET INSIDE?” Maddie eyed Ivy as the pink-haired witch tugged on a pair of rubber gloves with determination. She was instantly suspicious. “How many times have you done this?”

Ivy’s lips curved into a grimace. “You probably don’t want to know.”

“Try me.”

“Let’s just say there was an incident where I broke into a woman’s house and ended up doing community service.”

“You were arrested?”

“By Jack and his partner.”

“But … .”

“They had no choice.” Ivy was rueful. “If the defense attorney caught wind that they knew what I was doing they would’ve gotten in trouble, to the point where their case could’ve fallen apart. We ended up busting the guy running the community service ring when I was there, so it wasn’t a total waste of time.”

“Wow.” Maddie shook her head. “You still haven’t answered my question about how we’re going to get inside.”

“I was thinking about trying to use magic.” Ivy looked nervous at the prospect. “That’s why we’re at the back door.”

“Uh-huh.” Maddie studied the other woman for an extended beat and then pulled her coat over her hand so she could test the door handle without leaving fingerprints. It popped open immediately. “Or we could just walk inside.”

Ivy scowled. “Oh, sure, if you want to do it the easy way.” She giggled when she realized what she’d been planning to do. “It’s good you’re with me. You keep a level head.”

“Somebody has to keep their wits about them when you live with my grandmother.” Maddie’s eyes immediately started scanning the house as they stepped inside. “It looks normal to me.”

Ivy ignored the kitchen, which did indeed look normal, and headed for the hallway. “Just wait.” She led Maddie into the office with the cork board wall. Everything looked exactly the same as the previous day. “This is what we’re after.”

“Oh, holy … .” Maddie’s mouth dropped open. “Are you serious?”

“Yup.” Ivy let out a breath as she stared at the Post-It notes. “Starla was a bit … obsessive.”

“Do you think?” Maddie cocked her head as she started reading. “Who is Lexie Rochester?”

“I have no idea. Why?”

“Because Starla seemed to think that she was out to get her. Right here it says that Lexie stole her cover model.”

“Yeah, I saw that yesterday.” Ivy tapped her chin as she glanced between the notes. “I’m not an expert, but I have to believe that Starla was paranoid.”

“Just because you’re paranoid, that doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you,” Maddie noted. “That’s one of the mottos Granny lives by … and she’s freaking serious about it. Maybe the other authors banded together to drive Starla crazy.”

“I thought about that,” Ivy acknowledged. “The thing is, I don’t think it would’ve taken much to drive Starla off the deep end. Look at this one for example.” She pointed toward a yellow note. “She hated Cami Brighton for stealing her font. I mean … who gets worked up over a font?”

“Maybe Starla was pushed to the point where she perceived everything that was happening as being pointed at her.
